Очень прошу помочь…если кто читал мой пост «Странный день» до конца, то вы поймете в каком я состоянии…помогите пожалуйста перевести…если я так один текст не могу перевести, то что же дальше будет??ведь мне ещё два текста переводить надо!!!

Плиииииз, как перевести(я буду приводить предложения целиком и в скобках объяснять,что именно не понятно):

1)Almost overnight Western Europeans broadened their horizons (не могу перевести almost overnight).

2)For centuries following the collapse of Rome, European civilization had been narrowed by newly risen and hostile forces, first the Arabs, mobilized by the faith of Islam, later by the Ottoman Turks, and always by the impenetrable barrier the ocean placed in the way of Europe’s westward thrust (четсно говоря я запуталась…вроде слова все знакомые,но нормально сформулировать не могу)

3)The waters of the Atlantic carried European vessels to the far reaches of the globe (как перевести far reaches?).

4)In the vanguard of European expansion stood Portugal and Spain.

5)The Iberian peninsula had played a minor role in European affairs until the Age of Columbus when its soldiers and sailors carved out great empires (начиная с the Age of Columbus не получается).
